If you have not tried Kayaking before you need to make sure you gather some experience prior to the event. All participants will use 2 seater Malibu 2 kayaks (issued by the event). They sit low in the water so you are guaranteed to get a bit wet but its ideal to cool you down after completing the mountain phase of the run! For inexperienced kayakers, here are our top tips to get you started:
Who sits where? The heaviest teammate should sit in the back, regardless of experience, to keep the boat’s trim correct.
Steering: Ensure the rear paddler reaches as far to the back of the kayak as possible to use one ‘blade’ of the paddle as a stern rudder.
Timing and rhythm: Paddle in time as much as possible to save energy.
Push with your feet: A cycling action helps to use the big muscle groups. Extend the right leg as you pull with the right hand followed by a left leg push at the same time as pulling with the left hand. You should feel it in your abdominals, specifically your obliques.
Power transfer: Your arm muscles should not be your main power source. Body rotation, combined with the cycling action, uses core strength and the big muscle groups giving you much more power.
