Local lady proves age is no barrier as she tackles Scotland’s toughest one day endurance event.
Alison Stewart (63) from Ballinluig proves age is no barrier to people interested in taking on tough endurance challenges by tackling the grueling Artemis Great Kindrochit Quadrathlon yesterday. Alison and her partner, Anita Prentice from Grantully, together called team Woz this your idea? made it round the route in 15 hours 15 minutes.
“It was one of the toughest challenges we have faced and despite the poor weather, our unbreakable team spirit got us round the route and eventually to the finish line”, commented Alison.
Alison showed many of the younger competitors how it’s done by finishing ahead of 60 others, many half her age. Her partner Anita helped lead the way in the swim and was the first lady out of the water with an impressive time of 22 minutes and 11 seconds.
Billed as Scotland’s toughest one-day event the Artemis Great Kindrochit Quadrathlon (the Quad for short) is a 0.8 mile swim across Loch Tay, 16 mile hike/run over 7 munros (including 2500 metres of ascent), 7 mile kayak and 34 mile cycle around the stunning Loch Tay. The event is organised by Perthshire based WildFox Events and this year aims to raise more than £250,000 for two charities.
Asked if age matters when it comes to an event like this, Alison said “Well, as it was discussed on Woman’s Hour theother week that ‘40 is the new 60’, then Anita & I are well matched – so long as 20 isn’t the new 40 too! But Anita was wonderfully patient and encouraging, especially when she called ‘Well done, granny’! ”
Supporting Alison on the day was her husband Norman, some friends who were out along the route and her Killin based grandchildren who were out cheering for her at various stages.
Fundraising is a big part of completing this event and Alison has had the help of some fantastic friends, Emma and Dave Ashcroft, who have helped her raise over £1000 through donations from friends attending her husband’s 80th birthday bash a few weeks ago and also by organising a Mad Hatters Tea Party.
